Potgietersrus Nature Reserve and Game-breeding
Centre
South Africa's National Zoological Gardens has established two animal-breeding centers, one near Lichtenburg in the North West Province and the second on the northern outskirts of Potgietersrus. The Potgietersrus Game-breeding Centre covers some 800 ha of what used to be farmland and consists partly of bush-covered Koppies (one hillside features an extensive stand of aloes), an extensive grassy plain, and fair-sized dam surrounded by reeds. As might expected, the breeding center specializes in rare species from Southern Africa as well as other parts of the world. Part of the reserve (close to the entrance) features a hotchpotch of Llamas from South America, banteng wild cattle from South-east Asia and mouflon wild sheep from the Mediterranean region. A railway line divides the exotic from the indigenous African species - the latter having the run of the rest of the reserve. They include pygmy hippo from West Africa, and scimitar-horned oryx and addax from North Africa.
A variety of game
may be seen at Potgietersrus, including herds of
tsetsebe (the original animals came from
Doorndraai reserve), sable, lechwe, nyala, blue
wildebeest, Burchelll's zebra and Hartmann's
zebra. Waterbuck, impala and white rhino frequent
the bush areas. Potgietersrus Centre is open
year-round from 8H00 am to 18H00 pm in summer and
until 17H30 in winter. To reach it, take the
Potgietersrus - Pietersburg road (R101) and watch
for the sign. Visitors drive through the reserve
in their own cars, following a one-way route that
takes two hours to complete. There is a picnic
site close to the large dam. | |
